Sony-Sharp 10G joint venture to change the LCD industry, says Displaybank

SONY, Sharp and Samsung LCD TVs

On February 26, Sharp and Sony signed a non-binding memorandum of intent to establish a joint venture for producing and selling large LCD panels and modules. This is an initial sign that the long-term competitive structure between Korea and Japan will shift from Samsung and Sony versus Sharp, to Samsung versus Sony and Sharp.

Samsung ranked fourth in the LCD TV industry in 2004, following Sharp, Sony and Philips; however, the electronics giant narrowed its gap with the top player in 2005, and eventually took the top spot in 2006. In 2007, the company has maintained its crown while widening the gap with second tier players.

The collaboration between Sharp and Sony will continue to have an impact on the display industry in the mid-to-long-term. With this deal, LCD manufacturers seem to consider more carefully a long-term line investment. As a result, this can bring a relatively positive impact.
